Wooden Bowls

Bill Wallace

While still in college I began making custom furniture. In 1975 I started turning bowls.  My brother and I formed New Light Wood Works the following year

Currently, I teach classes at the Craft Centers of NC State and Duke and also at Alamance Technical College.  Woodworking classes are offered on occasion at my shop.  These classes concentrate on specific projects, such as stool making, which uses many of the same techniques needed to make chairs.  I enjoy teaching and the interactions with my students.  That is also one of the things I like about the Village of Yesteryear.  Being able to have a lathe at the Village and demonstrate my craft adds to the enjoyment of time spent at the fair.

Wood is a flexible material that lends itself to many different approaches and techniques and woodturning enables me to take advantage of pieces of wood that otherwise may be discarded, such as crotch pieces or burls.  I work with maple, oak, cherry, walnut and ash, to name a few.  Ninety percent of my bowls are now turned from green wood and I often embellish them with carving, dyes or other surface treatments.
