The Village has suffered a great loss -- Jack
Millar. His obituary is attached below. For those of you who would like to

| Mr. John "Jack" Robert Millar Jr., Lt.
Col. Retired, USAF (6/11/1918 to 6/4/2003) was the son of Sallie and John
Millar in Marietta, Ga. He was a Citadel graduate; earned a law degree
from Emory, University; Ph.D. degree from Florida State University. He
taught at F.S.U. and Greensboro College, where he was dean of students. At
R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. he held positions in personnel and was manager
of the Engineering Training and Development Center. He retired in 1982.
Col. Millar had a distinguished career as a World War II Senior Pilot,
U.S. Air Force. He was involved with the Royal Air Force on a secret
mission; participated on the first American air raids over Europe; worked
in General Eisenhower's Headquarters in London; and flew African Invasion
Plans from Gen. Eisenhower to President Roosevelt. As a member of the 58th
Heavy Bomber Wing, he was in charge of instrument training and flying B-29
bombers out of India and China. In making the first land based raids over
Japan, he became the only person in the world to make the first American
raids over Europe and the first land based raids over Japan. He
participated in planning the invasion of Japan. He received the Bronze
Star, an Air Medal with Star, Presidential Unit Citation with Clusters,
and many campaign ribbons and marksmanship medals. He was honored by The
Citadel as a Distinguished Alumnus. His volunteer career included board of
directors and treasurer of the Village of Yesteryear, Inc.; board of
advisors for the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work; president of
Winston-Salem Personnel Association; president and board of directors of
Family Services; served on official administrative board and missions
committee for Centenary United Methodist Church; charter member of
Winston-Salem Tennis Association; Winston-Salem Crafts Guild; life member
of the Association of Citadel Men; founding member of Air Museum
Association; and member of Centenary United Methodist Church and Mark
Bible class. He is survived by his wife, Betsy Rogers Millar of the home;
daughters Sally Mason, and Dr. Patsy Myers and husband Leslie M. (Marti)
Myers; grandsons Robert Mason and Joshua Myers, all of Winston-Salem;
sister Mrs. Sally Armstrong of Shalimar, Fla.; and several nieces and
nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. June 8, at Centenary
United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to
the Col. Jack R. Millar Scholarship Fund, the Citadel, Charleston, SC
29409; Hospice & Palliative CareCenter; Centenary Methodist Mission Fund;
or Old Hickory Council, BSA. |
